Hybrid Cardiac Surgery Suite Rebuild

Somewhere on the waiting list was a patient whose surgery could not be pushed back. Every room closure was planned with that patient in mind.

Why it mattered

Every hour of construction inside an operating hospital is taken from patient care. The work has to take as little as possible, give it back exactly when agreed and treat infection control as a hard rule, never a footnote.

The challenge

A teaching hospital set out to convert its cardiac operating rooms into hybrid suites with robotic systems and fixed imaging, on the same floor where it performs valve and bypass surgery every weekday.

Rooms could close only in windows agreed with cardiac surgery, perfusion, anesthesia and infection prevention. Each window had a queue of patients behind it, and a missed handback meant cancelled cases.

Schedule at a glance

The whole job, on one line.

Start to finish, as the schedule tells it. For work still in progress, the bar moves with today's date.

How we kept it on course

Our approach, phase by phase.

The same disciplined sequence we bring to every engagement, shaped around what this project needed most.

PHASE 01PHASE 02PHASE 03PHASE 04
PHASE 01Capture the clinical constraints

Theatre calendars, infection-control risk classes, utility dependencies and clinical approvals written into the schedule as fixed logic.

PHASE 02Plan each shutdown to the hour

Every outage and room turnover sequenced in detail and walked through with facilities and clinical leads beforehand.

PHASE 03Publish a plain look-ahead

A rolling two-week view issued to clinicians in everyday language, so no department was caught off guard.

PHASE 04Return each space on time

Commissioning, air balancing, testing and terminal cleaning sequenced so each area went back into service on the agreed day.

What changed

The difference we made

Measured the only way that matters: did the project land where we said it would.

Result 01Every room returned on its date

Each suite closed and reopened on the day agreed with the clinical leads, across nineteen months of work.

Result 02Infection prevention in the logic

Barrier builds, air-pressure checks and ICRA inspections were scheduled activities, not afterthoughts.

Result 03Robotics to first case

Delivery, calibration, staff credentialing and first case were managed as a single chain of dependencies.
