Why it mattered

Every hour of construction inside an operating hospital is taken from patient care. The work has to take as little as possible, give it back exactly when agreed and treat infection control as a hard rule, never a footnote.

The challenge

A community hospital needed to renew all ten of its operating rooms and the six air handlers behind them. The surgical schedule could lose no more than one room at any time.

Several air handlers served more than one room, so a slip on the mechanical side could quietly take two or three rooms down instead of one.

Schedule at a glance

The whole job, on one line.

Start to finish, as the schedule tells it. For work still in progress, the bar moves with today's date.

How we kept it on course

Our approach, phase by phase.

The same disciplined sequence we bring to every engagement, shaped around what this project needed most.

PHASE 01PHASE 02PHASE 03PHASE 04
PHASE 01Capture the clinical constraints

Theatre calendars, infection-control risk classes, utility dependencies and clinical approvals written into the schedule as fixed logic.

PHASE 02Plan each shutdown to the hour

Every outage and room turnover sequenced in detail and walked through with facilities and clinical leads beforehand.

PHASE 03Publish a plain look-ahead

A rolling two-week view issued to clinicians in everyday language, so no department was caught off guard.

PHASE 04Return each space on time

Commissioning, air balancing, testing and terminal cleaning sequenced so each area went back into service on the agreed day.

What changed

The difference we made

Measured the only way that matters: did the project land where we said it would.

Result 01Never more than one room down

Surgical capacity stayed at nine of ten rooms or better for the full twenty-one months.

Result 02Mechanical and clinical in step

Air-handler cutovers were matched to room turnovers, so no room was closed twice.

Result 03Surgeons kept ahead

A two-week room availability forecast went to the surgical chiefs every Friday afternoon.
