Why it mattered

Schools and universities run on dates that do not move: the first day of term, the start of semester, the first home game. The schedule has to be built backwards from those days, because students and families have already planned around them.

The challenge

A university’s new science building brought chemistry, biology and physics teaching labs together with research space and a student commons. It was the institution’s largest capital commitment in decades.

Fume hoods, lab casework and dense mechanical systems crowded the back half of the job, and the fall semester did not move.

Schedule at a glance

The whole job, on one line.

Start to finish, as the schedule tells it. For work still in progress, the bar moves with today's date.

How we kept it on course

Our approach, phase by phase.

The same disciplined sequence we bring to every engagement, shaped around what this project needed most.

PHASE 01PHASE 02PHASE 03PHASE 04
PHASE 01Start from the first day

The academic calendar fixed as the finish, with every milestone planned backwards from it.

PHASE 02Resolve the unknowns early

Ground conditions, approvals and long-lead items dealt with in the first two months.

PHASE 03Report in plain language

Monthly updates and short summaries for boards, faculty and donors.

PHASE 04Plan the move-in

Furniture, technology, laboratories and staff moves treated as a critical sequence of their own.

What changed

The difference we made

Measured the only way that matters: did the project land where we said it would.

Result 01Classes on the first day of term

Students attended their first labs in the building on the opening day of the fall semester.

Result 02Congestion designed out

Lab trades were sequenced room by room through pull planning, cutting stacking and rework.

Result 03Faculty in the plan

Lab moves and fume-hood certification were scheduled around the academic calendar.
